Internet Connection Issues

Hello, I recently reformated my hard drive with the reinstallation disk that came with my Dimension 4550 that included Service Pack 2.  I cannot currently connect to the internet through my Broadband modem...

There are no network connections for LAN or anything of the sort, and attempting to create a new connection doesnt get me anywhere.  I think i've narrowed it down to the Ethernet Controller, since there are no drivers installed for it yet.

I have to install the chipset drivers still, but will this resolve the confict (Intel PRO 100M integrated card)?

I'm using a friends connection to post here, and i dont have my service tag available.

Thanks, Steve

Follow-up:

I installed the Chipset first, and then the Intel PRO/100M Integrated NIC drivers which match whats in my computer.

I applied this to the Ethernet Controller, and it took away the yellow question mark and the Ethernet Controller entry, and replaced it with the Intel Network Adapter.

I have internet again, but continue reading:

With that, almost immediately i got a system message (?) that descibed 52 errors with the registry.  It led me to a webpage that looked very similart to the Windows Suport page that wanted me to fix the registry with a program that costs money  ( www.fixingreg.com)  I'm almost postive that its not authentic, however the registry error / system message concerns me.  Advice?

Thanks, Steve

Install Service Pack 2

Disregard this popup, it is a vulnerability in XP SP1

After this lengthy process is done, reboot and do a windows upadate to get the other 63 or so security updates you need.

Needed to be installed in this order, install the chipset driver in safe mode.

1. Chipset
2.Video
3. Nic
4. sound
5. any others you need.

At your friends PC you can download the drivers from Dell and then burn them to a CD, then go home and install them. No need for Safe-mode, just install. It is very simple.
