When you reloaded all the drivers, did you alos load the Chip Set driver? Without it, the others can not communicate to the system board.

I just realised that the Chip set driver for Inspiron 510m, Windows XP on DEll Website was released on 6/23/2006. My computer was bought in January 2005. Is this the reason why I could not install it into my computer? And I am also surprised why Dell did not send me a drivers-set CD when I order the laptop in case the HDD crashed like this time. So frustrating...
Thanks to anyone who is willing to help me.

I did try to reload the Chip set driver from DEll website but it would not install because "a file was missing". I am sure it was only file I could find on the website.

Please install the Notebook System Software on the system before installing the chipset driver. It is located under the System and Configuration Utility. On the newer portables and desktops this software must be installed before the chipset.

Nice to know Gina. I was under the assumption that the NSS included most of the critical drivers . Just exactly what is in there?

It has some additional drives (including USB) and updates that need to be loaded first. However, not all systems require this software. User must look under the topic of System Configuration Utilities and if it is listed there they need to install this first.

Unfortunately that is spyware. Go to Microsoft; download and update their Windows Defender program and do a full scan

Jmwills, thanks a lot for your tip. The new chip set driver could not be installed but I found an older version on Dell website and, thank god, it works. However, whenever I connect my PC to internet, there is this message popping up every 10-15 minutes:
Message from SECURITY to ALERT on (time) (date)
Stop! Registry Cleaner Recommended.
To fix the errors please do the following:
Download the Registry Repair from http://reginsepro.com
Install Registry Repair
Run Registry Repair
Reboot your computer
Failure to act now may lead to data loss and corruption

I did that but it did not help. I am still getting the same message. Is it because I have installed many drivers that my computer does not need?

Regarding the Notebook System Software, I have tried to install it twice but it said 'Your computer does not support this operating system'???

Thank you all ever so much. I should have joined this forum months ago.

Why can't you download SP2?

Thanks for the advice. But I could not install and run Windows Defender because I don't have Windows XP Service Pack 2, which I could not install, either from Microsoft Website or from a disk provided by my Uni. Sorry for being a pain but I know absolutely nothing about computers.

Turn off your anti-virus and spyware program prior to installing.

Did turning off the AV do the trick?  Now, go and download Defender and scan that machine!!:smileyhappy:
