Internet Connection Sharing
I networked my new notebook with my PC with a wireless G router and 2-way Direcway for Internet. Two days later my new notebook corrupted and two days after that my PC needed to be reinstalled. Now, for some reason, I don't have Internet Connection Sharing on my PC so I can't network. This probably wouldn't be an issue if I had a dial-up ISP, but I only have satellite connection. It's USB from the transmitter/receiver to the tower and ethernet from the tower to the router. I get the error message that my dependency group or service failed to start when I try to enable ICS. First, though, there's a long message about changing my LAN sitting to 198.1.0.1 and to change my adaptors from static addresses to auto detect.
So just moments ago I ordered an upgrade on my satellite transceiver so I should be able to network without ICS, but I was wondering if it's okay to reinstall Windows XP again? Once in awhile I get the message that there are some files Windows doesn't recognize and to put the Windows XP disc in. For many years now I've owned computers and never had one "crash" - how many times can you just reinstall the OS? If I thought I'd get ICS back I'd go ahead and do it.
Does anyone else have Direcway 2-way? Everyone's made me feel like a two-headed monster because I don't have dial-up. I'm in a very rural area and I didn't have other broadband options available to me. Anyway, the technical support has been terrible. Not just with Direcway - they don't support networking - but I've had two techs try to configure my network with no success and I've also had phone tech support from Gateway - even though they don't support networking. Like I said, though, I did it before the hard drive was replaced in the new notebook and after the OS was reinstalled on the PC.
Thanks for listening. As you can probably tell, I've been frustrated. Look forward to hearing from you.
