Hi ,the other 3 computers are connected to same router and are working fine,i have checked the ethernet cable and thats ok,the wireless connection is also ok ,but the pc on odd occasions when first switched on connects to the router and the internet and if i switch it off, as i did today and switch it back on ,its unable to connect to the router but when i hover the mouse over the icon its say that signal strength is good and is connected but its still is unable to connect to the internet and the ip address is invalid ip address 0.0.0.0,subnet is 0.0.0.0. if i try to do a repair it comes up with message after a while unable to repair.and the ip address is now showing 169.254.168.158. subnet 255.255.0.0.
hi how can i down load the winstock from that site when i cannot connect to the internet.i do not know if this will help but sometimes when i switch the pc on it connects ok but if i switch it off and switch on again its unable to connect to the internet, please can you help me further.thanks.
Since you have to be connecting to the internet to be reading this forum, you can download the file to the computer on which you have an internet connection and then copy it to removable media and transfrer it to the problem computer. I am always amused when someone reading this forum says that they cannot connect to the internet.
Still, if you problem is intermittent connectivity, winsockfix is not going to solve the problem. But this is the first time you have told us that it is an intermittent problem. Besides, you just said that you can't connect to the internet on that computer so you can't download the file, now you say you can connect until you switch it off. Now I am completely confused.
I can only connect on odd occasion when i switch the pc on and if i switch it off it will not connect again nor matter how often i switch it off and on.also i am using the work computer to send this email to the forum and not the pc that is having the problem.also you have said that if the problem is intermitten winsockfix will not the problem, can tell me what will fix the problem
Let me gather the relevant facts based on the notes. Correct me if I'm wrong.
a. This is a Dimension 4550 running on winXP.
b. It was able to connect wired and wireless before and now neither works.
c. Three other computers are able to connect to the internet with no problem.
d. All the computers are trying to connect to the internet via 1 single router.
It's rare to have both the LAN and WLAN hardware go bad at the same time. More often this may be a software issue, like Windows or a third-party software causing the issue. Or also a possibility of a change in the router's settings.
My recommendations:
1. If the issue happened recently, try System Restore. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, pick a date in which the computer was able to connect fine.
2. Try safe mode with networking. Reboot, press F8. If it works here then it may be an msconfig item causing issue.
3. Try disabling msconfig startup items as there may be a third-party software blocking internet connectivity. Go to Start > Run > type "msconfig." Go to Startup tab, click Disable All. Go to Services tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services" at the bottom. Click Disable All. Allow the computer to reboot and see if you can connect. If you can, then it must be a startup item or service. Then you can go through the tedious task of trying to isolate which one by trial and error. Usually it may be the firewall or antivirus.
4. Open router page, look for any MAC address or IP address filtering, a router feature in which allows only specific computers to connect to it.
5. If none works, back up your files and prepare for clean OS reinstallation.
i have done as i was told to do in the last reply to my problem but i still unable to connect to network wirelessly or via lan.i do not want to re-install o/s ,does anyone any further ideas of what can be wrong with my p.c.
yea when i saw what the op saw before i move my little saying i could see his point...It was not directed at him or anyone else in particular..just a general thought....

are you connected to a routher with the other 3 computers,,, and they are working from it?
go to device manager, click on network adapters, and right click on your adpater, and check to see if its running ok.
is the ethernet cable okay
reset your modem and routher if using one
are your other 3 computers using the same modem and router if using one? if not , make sure these deivcies are woking properly
go to network, find your internet icon, right click on it, and click on repair.

did you check the status of your network adapter in device manager to ensure that its working properly
also , did you go to network, right click on your internet connection, and click repair
may restore to an earlier date and see if that helps.
if i can get your email address, i will send windsocfix to you
