Internet Connection

Hi, I have a dell with Windows XP and am usually connect to ethernet and never had a problem. I've recently moved home and only have access via DSL. When I plug in the internet cable and put in the IP address it says that I'm connected to the internet but I cannot get a web page to load. Does anyone know what might be wrong with my settings. I appreciate any help.

Check your firewall, as it may be blocking it.  In fact, temporarily disable the firewall and see if that allows connection.

Why are you specifying an IP address?  Usually that is obtained automatically without user intervention.  Also, do you have anything in the  Internet Explorer/Internet Options/Connections?  normally nothing should be listed in that panel, including the LAN panel - it should all be blank.

ADDED: One other problem I've run across with newer and faster PC's.  If you have powered off the cable or DSL modem, when you power off your PC and then power both the modem and the PC on at the same time, the PC can boot up and start Windows BEFORE the modem has a chance to sync up and advise the PC that it's ready for operation.  In those cases, you will not get internet access until you restart Windows.  The DSL modem should be left powered on all the time or if you power it off, turn it on and allow a couple of minutes for it to sync up and be ready before you power on your PC.  I've had several customers with broadband connections experience this, my recommendation was to leave the modem powered on all the time and they haven't experienced any more connection issues.
