Internet Connection
I am replacing an older Dell Dimension XPS with a 2 year old Dell Dimension 4600. The newer unit was a relative's and they've gotten a newer computer. They connected to the net with a dial-up modem. I connect to the internet via a cable modem to Comcast. I have not had any trouble with the " old " unit and connectivity. It took me some days but I was finally able to connect the two units and succesfully transfered all of my files and settings. I followed the instructions on Microsoft's pages to no avail. And I was not able to transfer files by using the XP cd's. Finally I used the tranfer file link in the accessories part of the start up menu and it worked fine. My problem now is that even after transfering files I am not able to to connect the " new " computer to the net via the cable modem. I have been around the world on ever Dell chat line availible only to be sent to links and then suggested that I call the $90/hr support desk. Happily I have a warranty, but alas, they are closed on the weekends. When else do I have the time to call? I have at the direction of the support link, reset the ipconfig and so forth. I tried using the winsockfix mentioned in this forum.
I can switch between the "old" unit; still works great; to the new unit; no connection; and back to the "old" unit; continues to work great. I was able to tranfer files from the "old" to the "new" with no problem.
Aside from the " page not found" message, the connectivity icon tells me that " unable to contact DHCP server." I am about to find a bridge to throw the new 'puter from if I can't figure it out soon. I'm considering wiping the whole hard drive and starting over.
Thanks
Craig

cas962,
You have to power cycle the modem when you change the device that is attached to it. That's because the modem remembers the MAC address of the previous device, in this case the old computer. Think of the MAC address as a serial number.
Turn off the computer and the modem. Wait 5 minutes. Then turn on the modem and wait a minute or two for it to synchronize with the ISP. Then turn on the new computer.
