Internet Connection

I have a desktop and a laptop. I have a modem that connects to the desktop, but when I tried using a router to connect the laptop to use the internet as well (by using an ethernet cable), I cant get internet to come up. Before I was able to take the plug from the modem and plug it into the laptop and now when I tried nothing works. I tried calling Dell and they said it was a networking issue and they wanted to me pay 99.00 for the solution. I tried figuering out what was wrong myself and I dont know what it is. The modem in my laptop works fine and I tried repairing the problem it tells me that it cannot refresh the IP ADDRESS.... Any thoughts as to what I can do?

The cable\dsl modem plugs into the WAN port of the router and the two PC's would conenct to the LAN ports.  Power down everything before starting and then power back up the modem, router, and pc's in that order waiting about 3 minutes between each.

I have a similar problem to that of RMG1220. I have an external DSL router/modem to which is connected a 1-year old Dell Inspiron laptop and an old Mac desktop that works fine, and I had been able to access the internet fine with both (at the same time).
Tuesday morning (3/14), after working fine for a few minutes (I was looking at new posts, not cache), the laptop suddenly became unable to link to anything on the web. I tried switching cables, resetting and powering off the modem, rebooting everything and waiting 3 minutes as Jimwills suggested. I went through the entire built-in Dell diagnostic package, and even checked out my spyware as you suggested in another post Jim. The Dell still refuses to connect to anything.
HELP!!!

I also need help, I have a destop connected to a DSL modem and a Netgear wirless router.  My problem is that I'm unable to connect my laptop to the wireless router to get onto the internet. I called netgear and they fix the problem for my router to work,  but I sill can not connect to the internet from the wireless router on my laptop.  They suggested (Netgear) that I may have to reinstall my network card or something. I called dell but they also want 99.00 to help me. What is the process or what can I do myself to fix it.

Thanks

Jimwills -
I know this must be a drag for you - and I bet more questions are going to come in on this thread. I've been going back and forth between the U.S. and Brazil (I'm in the U.S. now) with this Inspiron laptop and never ran into a problem of this sort that couldn't be solved by powering down the modem and restarting everything if necessary.
How(where) do I do an ipconfig/all?? (I have Windows XP)

One more piece of info: One of the last coupla of times I fired up the laptop (or maybe it was the browser - Mozilla) a message flashed "local area connection network cable unplugged") - but I've tried all possible combinations of ethernet cables and router ports and I still can't connect on the laptop. The Mac seems to be happy as a clam. And the weird thing is that the laptop was working fine yesterday morning. BTW, I can't connect with my IE browser either.

I'm having the same problem.  Spent well over an hour with my ISP last night.

My XPS connects fine but my Inspiron 8100 stopped accessing the net.  I tried both direct line and wireless and it cannot get a valid IP address.  I refreshed my router IP settings and tried changing router channels.  The laptop can pick up other random wireless networks just fine.  I also tried powering down/restarting.  Also tried Start->run cmd  then   inconfig /renew.  The IP is 0.0.0.0.  When you uncheck "notify me of connection problems" the laptop will be assigned an IP starting with 169 which is unuseable.  This machine connected to the net just fine for four years.  My ISP suggested a problem with my network card but I think the fact that I can connect to other wireless networks but not my own suggests another problem.

Sorry, but that's it for me on this thread.  The Courteous thing to do is start a thread for each persons issues or else everyone gets confused.

My apologies, I thought all three of us were having the same problem and that a solution for one could be a solution for all three.  Mine seems to be working now, I may have fixed it by powering down the router again and restarting it.

While trying to figure this out, I also contacted DELL and Linksys (my router manufacturer).

DELL only provided a link on how to set up a wireless router, but Linksys suggested updating the router firmware.  Those of you who are still having problems may want to try that.  Instructions for Linksys routers are copied below.  Good luck to all of you.

Title: How to Upgrade the Firmware on a Linksys Router
URL: http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=557&p_created=1084217197
After the firmware update, hard reset the router to make sure that the new firmware would take effect. Once the reset button is pressed, all the settings in the router would be wiped out and you have to set it up again to work with your ISP.

To hard reset the router, please follow the instructions below.

1. Make sure that the device is turned on.
2. Press and hold the reset button.
3. After 10 seconds, remove the power plug while the button is pressed.
4. Let go of the reset button and turn on the device.
