internet connection

I had to reinstall my windows xp operating system and when I did I lost the ability to connect to the internet through my linksys router and through my sbc modem.  Is there a easy fix for this or am i not following the right steps?

Did you install the chipset drivers as the first drivers installed after reinstallation of Windows? Without the chipset drivers, Windows will not be able to recognize or install drivers for many other devices. Once the chipset drivers are installed you need to install the drivers for your network adapter, video adapter, audio adapter, and modem.  All drivers for your system can be found by clicking on the Drivers and Downloads link in the lower right hand side of the Dell forum window.

steve thanks for your help, I have reinstalled the chipset and we are trying to find the rest of the drivers on the disk that came with the computer.  We have installed the video card and the sound card but we don't know how to install the modem or network card?  Are we trying to install the modem that we got from yahoo?

I have no idea what this modem is that you got from Yahoo.   If is is a modem that connects to your computer by ethernet, then no software should be required.  If it connects to your computer by USB, then normally you would have to install software and this should be done before even attempting to connect the modem to the computer.    Since you are not saying which model computer you have, it is difficult to offer specific help.

sorry i have a 4550 desktop that i have had for a few years now.  I tried to connect the modem that i got from yahoo using the instalation cd  that came with it but when trying to install the computer could not find it.  When trying to install the "intel pro/100 m network connection"  we get a message for the network adapter 1394 when we try to update the driver it says that the file that we downloaded the info to has no information about our hardware.

Your message is very confusing and you still have not said whether or not you are connecting to the modem by USB or ethernet.  Again, if it is ethernet then you do not need the modem software and should not attempt to install it.  The 1394 adapter is your firewire adapter and normally has nothing to do with networking (it is used for connecting to video cameras or external hard drives).   The 4550 shipped with two possible network adapters. One is a Broadcom Gigbit adapter and the other is the Intel device.   Do you know which one you actually have on your computer?  Are you absolutely certain that you installed the chipset drivers before even attempting to install any other device drivers?
