Internet Connection

Here is my problem, I can not connect to the internet either wireless or connected to my dsl modem directly on my laptop.  On my task bar the wirleess icon says that I am connected to my network at 54 mbps, and when I am pluged in it says that I am connected at 100 mbps.  I know the problem is not my network because I have two laptops running wireless fine and a desktop attached to the router directly that works good.

I recently uninstalled McAfee because my subscription expired. I replaced it with AVG virus scan and am using windows firewall.  The only thing I can think of is that during the uninstall/ install some files were messed up or something I do not know.  The thing is that I did the exact same uninstall of mcafee and install of AVG with my desktop and it is fine.

The last thing I did with my internet working was to download AVG and install it. I then updated it and shut my computer down.  A couple days later I fired it up and was unable to connect.  Here again I did the same with my desktop but it is still running fine.

I am running a Pentium 4 mobil 2.8, 512 ram, inspirion 5150, with XP pro.

I can give you any more information anyone needs if it will help.

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

The ipconfig output shows that you are sucessfully connecting to your router.   Are you sure that the new software you installed is not somehow blocking the internet connection?

Either you router is not routing the internet connection to that computer or something is blocking it once you get there because there is nothing wrong with the hardware on your computer (since it is getting an IP address from the router).  Have you tried powercycling the whole network?  Shut everything down, wait 5 minutes, power on the modem first, wait another 5 minutes, then power up the router and finally the computers.

Alright I just tried booting up in safe mode with networking and my internet connection is fine. I was surfing the web like nothing was wrong. I restated it in normal settings and again it did not work. I don't know if this helps at all.

It means that something is running in normal mode (like a firewall) that is not running in Safe Mode.  In Safe Mode, none of the startup programs load, so you could start by using msconfig to figure out which programs are loading at startup that are blocking your internet connection.

I ended up just reformatting my computer and it works fine. I contacted McAfee and a number of other people have had problems like this and they are working on fixing it but o well.
