Internet Explorer 6-frequent error messages "Cannot find server"

Don't know which message board to go to--none exactly fits my problem.
I am running Windows XP Pro, on a Dell Dimension 4600. I have cable high-speed internet connection, via a Motorola modem, which is working perfectly. When I boot my computer, I am automatically online, and I can connect to Internet Explorer 6 [my default browser] However, when I try to connect to a web page [which I know is OK--I use it daily], I get the following message:"Cannot find server"; "cannot find the DNS server". This happens over and over with other sites I also use every day.
I run Zone Alarm [free] V5.5, and have set the security for the internet to 'medium'.
Can anyone come up with what is going on? This has been going on for the past 10 days.
Thanks.

It could be a firewall problem, temporarily disable the firewall and see if you still have the problems.

It could also be an ISP problem or some other issue withing the web.   Does this happen to ALL sites ALL the time or does it only happen occasionally with certain sites?  That may help determine where or what the problem is.

In I.E. "Internet Options", make sure there is nothing in the  "Connections" section.

Also, make sure you only have one firewall running.  If you are using ZA then make sur the built in Windows XP firewall is disabled - two firewalls can cause problems.

Although this is not a "modem" issue, I'm not sure either where would be the most appropriate forum section to post.  It may be the Windows XP software section or maybe the Other Software.
