tfhanna,

The IP address listed in the last error message, 67.194.15.211, is assigned to an MCI/Worldcomm user in or near Binghamton, New York. Unless that's your IP address, it's evidence that your machine may be infested with spyware/malware, and may not have any antivirus protection, and may not be protected by a firewall.

Please review the information and advice in the first link below.

Jim:
Thanks for your help.  As you suggested, I downloaded Spybot.  It found “Data source object exploit” in several keys in the registry.  It reported that it changed the keys and fixed the registry.  I rebooted the computer and tried the Internet.  Unfortunately, it still had the same problem.

I use McAfee antivirus software and update it often.  I did a full scan right after this problem occurred and it found nothing.

My computer does dial a number in Binghamton to connect.

Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks again.

Did you follow all the steps in Chris's post? Spybot, AdAware, and, if those fail, downloading HijackThis and submitting log information? There are may problems that are not detected by virus scanners that can cause problems like those you are reporting. It would be best if all three steps were followed before trying to determine what else might be causing those symptoms. After the people trained in interpreting HijackThis output have advised you, the problem may well be resolved.

(edit) Some of the problems listed may be resolved by use of a utility called  WinsockFix. But I'd still suggest running HijackThis and getting the output analyzed first.

My problem is solved!  Thank you.

I did all the steps, except after posting the log file, I ran WinsockXPFix.exe.  That fixed it.

I just checked the analysis results.  They recommended having HijackThis fix one questionable line.  I gave them an update on my situation to see if they still recommend the same action.

How can I prevent this from happening in the future?  Thanks again.

tfhanna,

SpyBot and the paid version of AdAware have some "lockdown" features that will help prevent problems like this. In addition to the "Network Safety" links below,  PC Magazine just published a review of the most popular anti-spyware programs.

Personal firewalls like ZoneAlarm, keeping up with all critical Microsoft updates, and keeping your anti-virus software up to date are all important elements in a "defense in depth" against unwanted intruders from the Internet.

A good link offering practical advice is "So how did I get infected in the first place?"
