INTERNET HOOKUP

I have Dell Dimension 4550 desktop in one bedroom with internet hookup.  I want to move the 4550 to another bedroom that does not have an internet hookup. Home is approx. 2000 sq.ft.  Is it possible to use a router and desktop card combination in the new room location?  If so, the router is connected to the CPU, but where and how is the desktop card installed in the 4550 CPU?

TSA66,

You can use a desktop wireless PCI card to connect to a wireless router.  The wireless router will be in the same room as the internet hookup (cable modem or DSL modem).  The Dimension 4550 will be elsewhere in the house with the wireless PCI card installed.

Here is a website with lots of useful info on home networking.  The amount of information on the site seems daunting, but you will find that setting it up is fairly simple and easy.

Check this link for a sample wireless layout:

You can ignore the printers and the gaming consoles shown in the layout.  You can easily add these to your home network anytime you want.

I found it easier and cheaper to run the wire in my house than do all the wireless, at least with a desktop.  Laptops are easy b/c wireless is built in.  Wired is also better b/c connection is faster - wireless is usually slower.
