Internet security recommendation

Can anyone recommend internet security software?  I don't know the difference between norton, mcafee, pc-cillin, etc.  I want to purchase a 3 user pack for myself and 2 sons.  One son and I have laptops with xp.  My younger son has an older desktop (Pentium 3) with windows me.  I would rather not have to upgrade to xp for my younger son if possible.  I know norton requires xp.  But I definately want the best security/virus protection possible because my older son is ALWAYS downloading viruses.  So if norton is much, much better than the others, I may consider upgrading the desktop to xp.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Norton does not need XP.

All three you mentioned are good.  Some will argue that Norton uses a lot more system resources than the other two but I don't think it's that noticable.  I use Norton and Mcaffee becasue we have free access to both but remember that none of them are any good unless you set them for auto update every single day.

Find what fits your budget and do some homework.

With 4 kids at home, I don't have time for homework! LOL  That's why I came here.

What about Bit Defender 9?  It was rated highly on some sites.

I just want the very best virus protection above all else.  My son has already destroyed two hard drives and I'm not buying him another one.LOL

Thanks for your help.

A virus can not destroy a hard drive, make it unusable cauing a reinstall yes, but it can not destroy it.  You not only need virus protection, but you also Spyware Protection.  Look for Microsoft Defender and Ad-Aware, both of which are free.

I've never heard of the program you posted, but just Google for frre anti-virus programs.  There are a few with decent reviews.

ds125:

I would recommend you try these free anti-viruses on your machines.  They work well on my older Compaq, also a PIII ;)  :

Avast! 4 Home Edition   http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic    http://www.free-av.com/

edit, my links must be out-dated, lol I see your asking about BD 9 hope the others work.

BitDefender  http://www.bitdefender.com

I would download each, and try them out for a few days some are complicated and difficult to master others are easier and more user friendly.

Also, although you didn't say,  A FireWall is an absolute must now-adays, and can prevent many problems/spyware before they get near your  p.c.  :

ZoneLabs, Zone Alarm Firewall http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

This has been on my compaq for 3-4 years now and has kept thousands of  'bugs' from getting to my comp

It does have a security window that will pop up and ask every time a new program wants to access the internet, and you have to give permission, but after a few days of use you should have it all set and have no problems
