Internet Speed

I have my computer hooked up to my schools network system, and I thought that maybe the system here was extremely slow.  But when I talked to my roommates, they explained to me that their computers were running pretty good and up to speed.  But when I took my computer home over xmas break, I realized that my computer was extremely slow at home also.
Does anyone know why my internet is soo slow and how I can improve it?

Hello there,

I have just bought a dimension 5000 and can't believe how slow it runs in comparison to my old computer ( which is over 3 years old!)  In fact I have spoken to tech support who are sending someone round tomorrow to look at it and sort a few other problems out.  My system runs so slow I can't use it as it takes literally minutes to access a web page.   Hope you get some useful advice.

Magneticnick85 and Stacjackie,

Check this link from Dell's support site:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/security/security?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Find the following topic on that page:

Follow the links on that page to get a better understanding of spyware / adware / malware, etc.  There are a number of tools (some of which are free) which can be used to combat this problem.  These include Adaware, Spybot, Hijackthis, Spyware Sweeper, Pest Patrol and others.
