IP address changes; why?

Hi:

I have recently installed a Netgear wall plugged range extender and it works fine with my Tivo, but now my Dell Inspiron laptop gives me an IP address starting with 169.xxx. etc. NOT 192.168.x.

My address for the laptop used to be 192.68.2.3 before installing the Netgear extender.

Now my Tivo IP address is 192.68.2.3 and my laptop address starts with 169.

I have a Dell Dimension desktop 8300 with a Dell Truemoble 1184 router connected via ethernet cable to the Netgear wall plugged ethernet bridge and a Netgear wall plugged range extender in the room with the Tivo and where we usually use the laptop.  I have the Dell 1180 wireless adaptor connected to the Tivo.

The laptop had builit in wireless card/capability.

I have settings for the DHCP server to automatically assign IP address and no firewalls running, etc.

Tivo is now working fine and recognizeds the "NETGEAR" wireless network, but the laptop does not.

I have two network names that my laptop recognizes:  "wireless" (the original default) and "NETGEAR" (the new one).  If I change the name of my SSID from "wireless" to "NETGEAR" will that solve the problem?  My laptop can still connect to the "wireless" named network, albeit with a weak signal.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

That address is because the notebook couldn't find a DHCP server (the router).  Try getting into the properties for the notebook's wireless card and do a repair.

Hi:

Thanks.  How do I go about doing that?

Just a bit more background info that might be helpful:  The laptop  was working fine before I set up the Netgear extender.  In fact, the laptop previously had the 192.168.2.3 address before I set the Netgear and Tivo up.  My Tivo, at first, was only intermittently working, but initially, the router gave it a 192.168.2.5 address, but unfortunately, it was never able to keep the signal, consequently, that's why I got the Netgear setup.

How can I set up both the Tivo and laptop to utilized the benefits of the range extender? Shouldn't they be on the same network?

Right now the Tivo is seeing/using the Netgear network and the laptop is seeing/using the "wireless" network.  That's ok, since they both work, but the signal on the laptop ("wireless") is much weaker than the Tivo signal (85-90%) on the Netgear network.  I'd like to have a better signal on the laptop and utilize the range extender better.

Thanks a lot.

Hello:
I've submitted this question before (see topic IP address changes:why), but I don't know how to configure my laptop appropriately.

I have a Dell Dimension desktop 8300 and a Dell Inspiron laptop 9100 networked wirelessley with a Dell 1184 router.  The network name is "wireless" and I have set up file and printer sharing successfully.  The signal, however, is very weak from several parts of the house (desktop and router are upstairs, SW corner and laptop is frequently used in NE corner of the house). It accesses both internet and file sharing just fine, but very low signal. Address of laptop is 192.168.2.3

I also have Tivo which is in the NE corner of the house.  I have the Dell 1180 USB wirless adaptor connected to the Tivo. It had no signal when trying to set it up wirelessly.  It never recognized the "wireless" network that my laptop was accessing.

I purchased a Netgear wireless wall plugged ethernet bridge and wireless wall plugged range extender.

Now Tivo has a very strong signal and recognizes the Netgear network.
When I have the laptop on, it still has the weak signal and it is "using" the "wirelss" network.  Files and internet still work fine, but no Tivo recognized nor does it get the stronger signal.

When I set the laptop up to "use" the Netgear wireless setup, the signal was excellent, but file sharing didn't work and the laptop address changed to 169.xxx.x....

How do I configure my laptop to use the Netgear wireless setup so I can take advantage of great signal strength as well as continue to share my files?

Also, will my Tivo recognize the laptop and vice versa.  I'd like my laptop, desktop and Tivo to all use the same network for internet access and file sharing.

Thanks for any help.
