IP address Issue

I recently replaced my wireless router with netgear 802.11b router (MR814). Since the replacement my laptop has been unable to retrieve an IP address from my network, therefore unable to browse the internet. I have a 8600 with the pro2100 intel wireless card. My laptop can detect the wireless router but it will not grab an IP address. My laptop is set for DHCP, which I did verify also with my router. Do I need to set a DNS? I've tried different settings with my router however, in my opinion, it seems like its a card setting issue. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. With my previous router, I had no problems.

make sure XP didn't turn the "firewall" on to the NIC...look for the padlock symbol on the connection icon...it will turn that on without asking you.

I dont see a padlock on the icon. I dont think that is the problem. Anything else I can check or do?

The Padlock only appears on the Beta Version of Service Pack 2.  Right clikc on the adapter and go to properties and go to the fartherest right tab which is the Firewall tab.  Uncheck it if it checked.

I probably won't help you much since I can't remember all the details to my problem, but, it may have something to do with your mac address. After I got a new cable modem, I had to clone my mac address. Check the help file with your router for more info.

Usually just unpowering the cable modem, waiting a minute, then repowering it and letting it connect to the ISP (LEDs will tell), then connecting the computer or router to the modem will let the modem get the new MAC address.  Only time the modem updates who it is connected to.

John, you are correct. I think my exact problem was that I purchased a new cable modem and my Linksys 54G router would not work with it and repowering the router did no good so after calling Linksys support, they walked me through the cloning which solved my problems.

Sorry but I am a bit ignorant on how this works but I am usually able to get thru most of my problems just by playing around some.

Your ISP may have been expecting a certain registered MAC address - the one you cloned.  In that case you'd have to either clone the registered MAC address or call and tell them you got a new computer and give them the MAC address of the router.  Glad you got it going.
