ip address

can someone tell me in plain english! Why I have a strong signal for an unsecure network and i get limited or no connectivity? something about an invalid ip address? it starts off 162. I have no acess to the source of this signal,  it comes from a pub across the street and is for public use, I've asked them at the pub and they dont know, is there a way I can log on?

thanks.,.,

If the network is truely unsecure and does not use any MAC address filtering, you should be able to connect.   Does it try to get an IP address from that network?

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

val, if it's not your network, connecting without permission is likelly illegal (depending on where you live).  secondly, just because it says 'unsecure' doesn't mean that it will allow anyone to connect -- MAC filtering for instance could prevent you from connecting even though the wireless data is unencrypted

Why are you retyping the output of the command back in the command prompt window?  All of that text after your ipconfig output is just telling you that you aren't typing in a command (totally expected).   It does appear from your ipconfig output that you are not getting an IP address from the network you are trying to connect to.  This could be because MAC address filtering is being used on the router to prevent unauthorized persons from getting on the network, it could be that you are not sufficiently close to the router to make a good connection, or it could be that a firewall running on your computer is blocking network access.  Start by troubleshooting these possibilities.
