IP Address

I have a belkin router for 3 dell computers, 1 wireless lap top and 2 desk top.  One of the desk tops won't connect to the internet.  When I hit repair it stops and gives the message, Cannot renew IP address.  I checked the IP addresses of all computers (run, command, ip config) and the following appears:

laptop ip address 192.168.2.3
Main desktop ip address 192.168.2.2
Secondary desktop ip address 169.254.6.247

I assume the last ip address is the culprit, but not sure how to fix or how it go that way.  Any suggestions?

Unplug the router and the modem and then plug them back in.

On the desktop that is getting the 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address, try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here.

You failed to mention if the desktop was wired or wireless, so I'll presume wired.  Try a new cable or better yet swap cables form the two desktops and see what happens.

The issue is the desktop is not seeing a valid DHCP server.  The IP Address is valid but it is a private range reserved for Microsoft.

Also forgot  to mention, I switch out the cables and the desktop in the basement worked fine with both cables.

Here's more details.  The main computer is in the basement and is wired. The laptop has a built in wireless card and works fine.  The other desktop  is on the 2nd floor and it is using a belkin g wireless desktop card.  The speed is 54Mbps, the signal strength is good to very good, but the status says limited or no connectivity.  I contacted belkin and they had me go thru all my channels but still no success.

It's really difficult to help you if you don't try to help yourself.  Did you even bother trying winsockfix?
