ipconfig error message

I have been unable to connect to my internet provider. I use road runner on a dimension xps
system running windows xp. I was trying to do a: ipconfig /renew from the command window when i
got the following message .......

An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection. An Operation was attempted on something that was not a socket.

Can you tell what this means and can i fix the problem?

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks,
Here is the info!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The message means that the previous IP address was "autoassigned" by your PC, because it was unable to contact an external DHCP server. The previous IP address likely began with 169.254.
*****The original was autoassigned but began 192.168************
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm assuming your computer is directly connected to the cable modem. If it's not, you need to explain your connection setup in detail.
*****modem is conected to Linksys 4 port USB router....connections to computer come from router ports******
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The question that needs to be answered is why you're unable to obtain an IP address from RoadRunner. Try shutting down the computer, and then shutting down the cable modem. Wait a few minutes, then turn the cable modem back on. Wait until the indicators on the cable modem indicate that it's successfully connected to the cable network. Then turn the computer back on.
******Ran thru that entire scenario with road runner tech with no luck....I'm on my kids computer
that is connected to the same router my computer is and it works finae as you can see*****
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If that doesn't resolve the problem, we'll need to know more about the problem. When did it start? What changes were made before the problem began? Jim
*****All I can remember doing before the problem started is installing Sound Blaste Audigy2ZS
sound card*****

Hope some of this info helps??

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

Corruption of the Winsock/Winsock2 registry entries is sometimes caused by spyware/malware. I'd suggest scanning the machine for such pests, using the information and advice contained in the first link below.
