Is my modem working ??

Computer : Dell Dimension4600

O.S. :XP Home SP2

Browser & ISP : I.E.6 / AOL 9 ( normal dial up connection not broadband)

Modem : Conexant D850 56K V.9X

Hi there,

If I look in my Network Connections folder while I am on the internet my modem shows itself as being disconnected. When I right click on it the options box appears but if I then click on "enable modem" there is no response. If I click on properties no properties box comes up at all.

I have noticed that when I am logging on to the internet while observing the Network Connections folder, at the moment the connection is made an icon flashes up in the folder and then disappears so quickly that I can't read it nor click on it to see what it is!

However, when I look in Task Manager under networking it shows that a connection has been made by a WANminiport device. Does this seem right?

Device Manager allows me to right click on the modem.It shows my modem as working properly with no conflicts & I have the latest driver installed.

My antivirus/firewall and antispyware/adware programmes come up clean and I have run with this situation for a while now with no "apparent" problems.

I've contacted AOL and the couldn't help other than to suggest un / reinstall both my modem and AOL software which I did to no avail.

I haven't knowingly installed any software to allow this situation and am not directly linked to another computer.

I would like to know if I really have something to be concerned about, and if I do what I can do to resolve the problem,or is this just normal and am I worried over nothing.

Any comments or suggestions would be gratefully recieved.
