OK this is whats going on.  I had this problem 2 weeks ago and it was resolved over the phone.....they had to set me up a new IP address.  My husband installed a game that messed up the computer somehow and after that we were able to connect to the internet using our dial up connection, but i kept getting a message that we were not connected.  My phone line was tied up and I could get my earthlink e-mail, but nothing else.  I called and to make a long story short, new address and everything is fine...........until I try to reinstall something that I have installed before with no problems.  Now it's doing the same thing.  Connecting but the computer isn't recognizing that its connected.  I did a DNS ping whatever and it says 100% loss...........what's up.  I have never had problems installing programs before........why now??   HELP PLEASE tracy

When you install an application, it might affect a certain modem file.  If you have the Modem Driver on the CD or Hard Drive, you might want to remove the Modem Driver from the Control Panel and reinstall the Modem Driver.
