Keyboard locks when disconnecting my ethernet cable

Help - I am a new user.  I have been trying to set up a wireless connection and my keyboard and mouse lock when I disconnect from my current AT& T connection.  I have been attempting to install the software for a Netgear wireless router WPN824.  At the point when the connection wizard tells me to disconnect my ethernet cable from my computer to plug into the router, the mouse and keyboard lock.  I have called netgear and they tell me it is a problem with my computer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an Inspiron E1705 with windows XP professional
Dell Inspirion 9400
Intel (R) Core 2CPU
T5600 @1.83 GHz
1.83 GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM
and a Microsoft USB wireless mouse (Intellipoint)

Is your keyboard also USB? What othe USB devices do you have connected to USB ports on your computer?

This doesn't make sense.  Does the same thing happen if the mouse and USB printer are not connected?  If you don't run the intallation software and just unplug the ethernet cable from the modem, does the same thing happen?

Thanks for responding - I know it doesn't make sense, I think something is not configured correctly but I am too much of a novice to even begin to know where to look.

The same thing happens if I don't run the Netgear installation software. If I am working at the computer and connected to the internet, then I decide to work somewhere else, offline, and uplug the ethernet cable the keyboard & mouse both lock up. I can then shut down the computer and restart it (with the ethernet cable disconnected) and everything will work fine. The problem is that the installation hardware tells me I need an internet connection....

I can't remember if it has always been like this, but I know a few months back I called the tech support at AT&T because we were have problems with our regular connection. He told me that our wireless connection was interferring with the broadband connection and had me disable or turn off something. I have used this laptop on other wireless networks without any problems - but have not tested it since the "change". Maybe I should be taking this somewhere to be repaired??

Thanks for any insight you might be able to shed.
