LAN Network Trouble
I am at college and the same thing has happened to me again, this time on my new dell. Last year my internet went out and no one could figure out the probleml. When I looked at the Status bar for the LAN network it showed me Sending but not Receiving, I never figured out how to fix it so I got a new Dell this summer. This year I have come back to school and it started working fine, then all of a sudden the same thing happened this time on my Dell. the status for the LAN network shows me sending packets but not receiving any. The only thing is that I have an external hard drive plugged into my computer that has my music from my old computer. I scanned this drive with Norton and nothing showed up. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this problem. IF you do, you're a lifesaver.

Which Dimension do you have? What network adapter is installed in it? What operating system is it running? Did this problem begin when you added the external hard drive? If so, what kind of drive is it, and how is it connected to your system?
Are there any special settings the college network requires in order to establish a connection?
Do you recall anything that might help explain when this problem first began?

Probably what "Infinite_Trial" had in mind was "lspfix", a tool for correcting errors in the system's list of "Layered Service Providers" for network services. You can download it here.

1. go to start then run
2. type regedit
3. expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
4. expand SYSTEM
5. expand CurrentControlSet
6. expand Services
7. scroll down, right click on winsock then delete
8. right click on winsock2 then delete
9. restart system
10. go to start> control panel
11. double click network and internet connections
12. choose network connection
13. right click on local area connection then choose properties
14. click install under general tab
15. click protocol then add
16. click have disk
17. browse
18. go to desktop>my computer>local disk c:>windows
19. type INF on the file name field then click open
20. click open again on the next window
21. click ok
22. choose internet protocol (tcp/ip) then ok
23. close and restart system
24 finally, go to start then run
25. type netsh int ip reset delllog.txt then click ok
a black screen should pop up and close. try your internet connection after. if it still does not work and ip is still 169.254, you might have to reinstall the operating system because your registry might have been corrupted by spyware

There are other steps short of a reinstall that can be used to remove spyware. If resetting the Winsock2 and TCP/IP networking settings as described by "Infinite_Trial" don't resolve the problem, please post back.
