LAN setup

Hi,

I am having trouble setting up my LAN internet connection on my laptop. I went through the setup wizard and after I click finish, unlike my desktop, there were no "LAN or High-Speed Connection" icon on page. However, when I went through setup wizard using other types of internet connection (ex: broadband.....and so on), those incons appeared after I click finish.

So my question is: how exactly do I get the LAN icon to appear on my screen so that I can input my internet configurations.

Thank you for your help!

hi,

did your broadband connection come with a manual and cdrom ? Usually there's a nice setup utility on cdrom that does all the hard work for you.

well newbie u didn't specify the type of operating system u are using, is it windows or linus?, if windows what version?, is it win95,98 or even the easiest to connect to the internet thus win XP.

depending on the type of operating system u are using some may need a restart, which resolves most networking problems.

Newbie u can "type inetwiz in run", to setup your intenet connection. Afterwards that icon should show on the screen.

In another way it is better to setup the local area network in control panel, thus if u will be connection to the internet through it. Afterwards setup the internet connection and restart your system which I bet u will display that icon on the screen.

In general, you should be able to right-click *any* application, drag it to your desktop and select "create shortcut here" to then open that application from your desktop. Important point would be that it is a "Shortcut", don't move the application.

i thinks the main question was at the end of the post : how do i change the network settings so internet connectivity is achieved ? Since Art covered the shortcut part, here's my attempt at the network settings :

For that, no shortcut on the desktop is needed. (since a "LAN or High-Speed Connection"  was mentioned i assume we are talking about XP) Just open start-settings-network connections and right-click on that connection and choose 'properties' and change whatever you want.

Because of this need for a shortcut i believed the technical knowledge level is not very high and a setup CD was the best option. Or a manual from the provider with a step-by-step setup.

Assuming, again, the modem/router offers IP settings through DHCP, tcp/ip settings should be set to "obtain an ip address automatically" and "obtain DNS server address automatically".

Next step would be to open a command prompt. ( click start, run and type CMD. Hit enter. A black command window will open. In this box, type ipconfig /all and hit enter. If there is an entry like this : DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 then type ping 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. You should see something like this :

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=150

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum =  51ms, Average =  27ms

Successful ? Type ping 216.239.59.104 and hit enter. Again replies should be received.

Still successful ? Type ping www.google.nl and hit enter. Replies should be received.

If so, open your Internet browser. Internet Explorer probably ? It should connect to the internet.

No success ? Post back here the results of all these steps up until the point it goes wrong and help should be possible.

Too bad no machine type or Operating system was specified, no modem/router brand or type, no connection type (DSL or cable) etc. Help us help you newbie ? Hope this helps.

I never had (nor needed) any of those details.

Plugged into an Ethernet Port and it was connected, the WLAN just added a requirement to
tic a box and agree that you wanted to connect.

Never needed any shortcuts to do that, now Bluetooth was more demanding and I did make
shortcuts for that, but rarely need them anymore.

i know, and in the ideal situation that should have worked for him....

Troubleshooting this remote way requires this kind of step-by-step approach - i am learning... a lot this way. As much fun as helping out... and no, i don't wanna work at the helpdesk :-)

Hi All,

Thank you for all your replies. Sorry I've got back to you guys abit late. Just to give you basic details on my operating system. It is a Latitude D600 with Window XP Professional. I will give all your comments a try today. Basically, my main problem is that I couldn't get "LAN or High-Speed Connection" to come up on my screen. Not even on desktop and not in Network Connections screen either.

ps: my internet worked fine before this until I accidentally delete that "Lan or High-Speed Connection" icon.

Thank you
