Laptop capatable with router

I have a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop that I am trying to get compatable with the router (Linksys WRT54GL) that I just hooked up.  I have created my network.  When I try to get online wirelessly I am told I need a flash drive.  Why is this?  What is the standard proceedure for setting up a laptop to go wireless?

The first thing is to NOT use the wireless networking wizard.  It can really mess things up if you answer just one of the quesitons wrong.   Instead, open Network Connections, right click your wireless connection and select View Available Wireless Networks.  If you see your router, just select it and click on the Connect button.  If you wet up security, it will ask you enter the network key.  If you did ot set up security, it will warn you of the dangers of connecting to a non-secure network.  Connect anyway, and then worry about setting up security.

First make sure you are wired to the router.
Enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of your browser and press enter.
You should be prompted for a login.
Leave the user name space blank, type in admin for the password. Click OK.

To Setup security click on Wireless. Then Wireless Security.
For the Security mode select the level of security you want to use.
WPA2 is best. I would not select anything lower then WPA.
WPA Algorithms: AES
Put in a shared key. This is your key that you will use to connect.
Click on Save.

To Setup Mac address filtering.
Click on Wireless. Then click on Wireless MAC Filter
Click on Enable Wireless MAC Filter.
Click on Permit only PCs listed to access the wireless network.
Clikc on edit MAC Filter List.
For MAC 01: enter your MAC address. At this time enter all MAC
Adresses that you want to access your router wirelessly.

To find your MAC address on the computer that you have the wireless card on,
you can go to Start/Run type in CMD click OK.
At the command prompt type ipconfig/all and press enter.
On the list, your mac address is the physical address of the wireless
connection of your network card. ie. 00-20-AD-AC-4B-22

Other security measures you should take
Are changing your SSID which is unter Wireless and Basic Wireless Settings.
And changing you login username and password under Adminstration  Management.
