Laptop Network Adapter No Longer Detected
Hi all,
I have an Inspiron 640m laptop, running Windows Vista. It has been connecting to wireless just fine for over a year, but it took a rather hard fall, and now it does not detect any wireless networks, at home or anywhere else where I used to connect wirelessly. If I click "Diagnose why Windows cannot find any additional networks", I receive the message "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured," and my Wireless adapter is no longer listed under Network Connections.
In Device Manager, under network adapter I have listed "Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller." Following a troubleshooting guide, I tried uninstalling this and restarting the computer, so that it would auto-detect upon reboot, but it seemed to reinstall itself a few seconds after I uninstalled, before I could reboot, and when I restarted nothing changed.
I also tried installing the most recent driver associated with my WLAN MiniCard, but received the message that "No compatible hardware was found."
Since the wireless was working fine before I dropped the laptop and the next time I used it it was like this, I'm pretty sure it is a problem with the network adapter itself; be it jostled or altogether dead, but I have no idea what to do with this information.
Many thanks in advance :)
Edit: Perhaps I should also mention: I can still connect to the internet via ethernet cable with no problems.

The first thing to do is to check to make sure the wireless MiniCard is firmly seated in the MiniCard slot. The following link to a page in the Service Manual for your model will help you do this:

I agree with Steve. The Broadcom 4401 is the integrated wired NIC, where the wireless card would be either a Dell Wireless (Broadcom chipset) or an Intel card.
The fact it isn't showing up in device manager, even as an unknown device, makes me thing the card is not there, not connected properly, or disabled in BIOS.
