Latitude CPx J internal modem?
I downloaded the Service manual for my "new" Latitude and it mentions an internal modem, apparently as an option?, but it doesn't say right out. This would be a lot better than a card, given that they are available in the 56K size. Are these things available at all, and for what price? Also, it looks like my fan just died and the manual seems to indicate it's fairly easy to replace. The pictures show a white substance on the part that touches the chip; is there any problem removing the old one? Does that white stuff stick, or is it as easy as it looks? Thanks.

The thermal interface pad will seperate more easily if you remove when its a bit warm. Use a sharp knife to carefully remove if it seems to be sticking. The modem from the inspiron 3800 is exactly the same.

Hi,
The internal modem was rare, and also fitted to the Inspiron 3800. The fan can be easy to change, but sometimes the screws are very tight, and you cant get straight to them. It may mean taking off the back metal-work. The thermal coupling pad may come to bits when you remove the heatsink, but will normally stay where it should. Have a good look at where the cables to the fan fit before you start.

Back to the fan, is there a way to test the fan to be sure that's the problem? I've only had this thing for two or three weeks so I don't know when it should turn on if it is ok. When I first fired it up I heard a wavering grinding sound, like it might be chattering, like it needed to be oiled. I thought it was the HD at first, but the noise wasn't coming from where the HD is. I didn't know to look for the fan until after the noise wasn't there anymore. Then I could hear the normal sound of the HD. I can stick a toothpick through the slots and turn the fan blades, so it isn't frozen up.

Hi,
The fan can be tested with the Diags, and the modem fits on the motherboard, and has a socket for the phone line on it. There is a blank on the RHS you remove.

Hi,
F12 uses a hidden partitian you may not have. You can boot using the resource CD, or download them from the web-site. They run under DOS, and you can make a CD, or they make a set of 5 floppy disk's. [ bootable ]

1109 was a diag that worked on a lot of models, 1102 less. Use the one that they say however.

Hi,
Check the Diags you are using, most dont run from the desktop, you boot them and run under DOS. The I8KFangui will let you change fan settings, so you may be able to test it with that.
