Did you install the ChipSet drivers?  The NIC card is not going to work without it.

  Yes-did that first -, the Nic actually works correctly, Wireless works, dialup works- cannot figuer out what the current message means-if there is a problem-something should be failing. ( The way my mind works...anyway)

TMSEZ ... How resolved your problem? because your problem is and my problem ... Network Controller is ??? in device manager / ?Other device/?Network controller (location PCI bus 1, device 3, function 0).

I have Dell Latitude D505 with MS Windows Xp Home.

Accroding to Dell, there is only one wired NIC card for that model:

Yes, I download this drivers but not resolved my problem... I install new driver for network but in device manager "network controller" is not good (my network adapters is good).

 I wanted, I used device manager to disable the yellow dog "?" device and have quit getting the search for drivers, and error at every start up, I complete installed XP professional even and then re-re-fresh installed everything from Dell's download site- I can live with functionality as long as I don't have to see that stupid message at every boot- large number of us at work have this same laptop and EVERY one of them has this "?" yellow dog alert, told them what I did, and we are all happy-except one guy whi is thinking of returning his ( Hard drive noises-bought ext warranty)..TTFN
