In Device Manager General Tab it states -'device is working properly'
The device is enabled
In the Diagnostics Modem failed to respond
The Bluetooth Icon on the bottom of the screen is Red at all times

I've had the almost identical problem on a 500m. I tried all the usual things and nothing worked.
It turns out that the bluetooth device in the laptop is loose, and is not
making a clean connection to the motherboard. It may be a case design fault; I'm not assigning
blame here.
I've found out that the bluetooth card on my laptop is located at the bottom left of the case,
about 1-2 inches from the very left and about 1/2 inch from the very bottom; i.e. about 2 inches
from the left-touchpad button.
By tapping or pressing on the case at that point a couple of times I can normally convince XP to
recognize the device correctly.
I hope this helps you!

Thanks for the reply, if I press on the left of the touch pad the Blue light does come on for a second or two. I am awaiting a reply from DELL on this.
Regards.

I have the same problem. When the Notebook is "cold" the blue light is on for about 5 seconds and then it turns into red. And normally there is nothing you can do about it.
Any solutions

I have a D600 that started exhibiting the same problems today. Just under the PC Card slot on the left side is a removable panel. While I have never opened my notebook and wouldn't even consider doing so because it would void my warranty, I've heard that by removing this panel you can access the module and wiggle it back into place.
Good thing my computer fixed itself today or I would have had to try this...
Regards to all, including the Keepers of the Holy Warranty.

Well my D600 has been fixed now. The Bluetooth card was loose on the motherboard. So I got a new mothernoard and a new bluetooth card and it's all fine. Thanks god I am a gold costumer.

Thank you for the highly technical fix via "tapping". I spent $100 on a new modem thinking the old one was kaput and I tapped and it works again.
