Latitude D810 Wireless Network & printing setup

I recently bought a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G), in hopes that I'd be able to use it for a wireless connection for my D810, and be able to print from the printer currently connected to my desktop.
I set up the router so that I have internet access from my laptop, however I cannot figure out how to create or utilize a network in order to print and share files between my desktop and my laptop.
I ran the "network setup wizard" on both of my computers, but I still don't see any changes on my laptop.
My desktop runs Windows XP Home, and the D810 uses XP professional. Is it possible to set up a wireless network on my laptop so I can share the files off of my desktop and print wirelessly?
I've enabled file sharing on the folders and printers on the desktop that I'd like to access, but I have no idea what to do next, or where to start.
I really need some help, and I only have a few more days before I can return this wireless router (since it doesn't perform the duties it outlines on the package).
I contacted the router's manufacturer, and they state that they don't provide any support for networking (though it sukks that they mention it in the advertising on the box, but don't tell you how to do it).
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. If someone could tell me what to do, or where to look, that would be most helpful.
Thanks.
