There are Wireless 802.11 G and B networks available.
From what I understand, even if there is not a network available. It should at least start searching and blink green.
from the manual...
--------------------------------------
Wi-Fi Catcher™ light — The light operates as follows:
o Flashing green: Searching for networks
o Solid green: Strong network found
o Solid yellow: Weak network found
o Flashing yellow: Error
o Off: No signal found
--------------------------------------
I have double checked the bios settings and the quickset software, and everything shows that Wi-Fi Catcher is enabled. But I have never been able to get the status light to come on.
I'm having the same problem with my new 820. I've removed and reinstalled Dell's provided Intel wireless drivers and utilities and the Dell quickset utilities and still nothing. I seem to remember that it worked when I first got it. Is there a service that needs to be running? Just like above, my Dell quickset utility shows that it's enabled and should be functioning.
I have the exact same problem. Reinstalled drivers and wifi catcher does not work (had to install from intel.com since the 3945 zip-archive from Dell was corrupted).
It is not working on my notebook (without preinstalled windows), not working on coleague's notebook (similar configuration as my one) but also not working on the secoond coleague's notebook (preinstalled by DELL).
Hi,
Did you finally find a way to make this LED light cause...I've just bought a M1210 and I have the same problem: wi-fi catcher LED doesn't work. It didn't work with the preinstall so i format and reinstall all but nothing change, still nothing. I wonder if wi-catcher has ever worked for a dell computer.
Finally I solve it :) It was problem between keyboard and chair :)
If you want to use a WIFI catcher - it works ONLY when notebook's off. Then you have to hold a wifi catcher button for about 2 or 3 seconds and then release. After that the LED will be blinking.
The wifi-drivers I downloaded from Dell were corrupt on every attempt, and finally I had to get them from intel instead. When I couldn't get the wifi-catcher to work I automatically assumed that it wouldn't work without the Dell drivers.
It does not work unless the machine is off! DUH! Thanks for pointing that out. What an utterly stupid design. The button does not do anything when the laptop power is on.
Anyways, I found a description for the LED-codes. Adding them here for future reference:

Blinking Green - Searching
Solid Yellow - Weak Signal Found ( 70dBm)
Solid Green - Strong Signal Found ( >70dBm)
Blinking Amber - No Signal
THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking time to post solutions on this board.
i was right smack in the middle of a HOLD to get connected to the right department to solve the wi-fi catcher led problem when i found this little thread here with a SOLUTION! i was already on hold for 20 minutes!!!
i can't believe i spent so much money on a brand new xps m1210 and get the crappiest technical support ever. everyone has been very polite and accommodating but no one has solved the problem in all my calls and chat support experience.
my led light works fine and i am now done stressing over it! :D
I have the some problem: the Wi-Fi Catcher Led doesn't work!... even that windows of Wi-Fi Catcher Locator apears and Wi-Fi works.
I tried to turn off the notebook and to hold on the switch. The led starts to turn on for a few sec. But when I start the nothebook the led doesn't work anymore.........
I have this same problem in my Vostro 1400. After re-installation of driver, now it works only after shutting down from the real administrator account. If I shut down from another user account (even with administrator power), the WiFi catcher would not work in power off state. I am using Vista Ultimate 32-bit.
I just purchased a Dell Inspiration 1721 in September and can not figure out how to get it to work. I've tried it many times with the computer off with no luck. Is it still working for you?

I do NOT have bluetooth or Wireless Broadband (only Wireless 802.11g/b)
Everything is enabled - BIOS Settings and Quickset software.
Still having the same issue. (No wi-fi catcher light)
What a hassle for a simple LED. Not sure what to do now!
Does this work for anyone???
