"Limited or No Connectibility"

Hi,

I've seen other posts on this problem, it just started for me.

I used to have a DSL modem on my Dimension, and I just switched to a cable modem.  Worked fine, but the installer told me I should remove all the spyware stuff I had on the machine, and install the program that came with the cable internet service.

So I uninstalled my Spysweeper, and Adaware, but when I did so, Adaware told me that it couldn't open a Install log, so I just deleted the folder and removed it from the add/remove programs list.  I then installed their PC protection package (Called "Freedom Internet Security" from Adelphia).

After a reboot is when I started getting my limited or no connectibility problems.  I tried uninstalling the Freedom stuff, to no avail.

Any suggestions?  The Adelphia people said I should call Dell, saying the problem's not with their equipment, but I'm way out of warranty....

Thanks in advance.

Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here

Thanks, Steve, I tried that last night with no luck.

I thought maybe if I reinstalled Windows XP, it might help "reset" whatever the problem was.

That didn't work either.

Boy, do I need help.

Will do.  Thanks, I appreciate the help.

I've been doing some searching, and I've found a few things that people are suggesting.  Anything about any of these look promising?   Any to totally avoid?

  • Go to the command prompt and then type the command "Netsh winsock reset".
  • If that doesn't work, something you could try is:

    - Right click your Broadband connection in Network Connections

    - Choose Properties

    - Choose Internet Protocol

    - Click Properties

    - Choose the General Tab and click Advanced

    - Choose the Options Tab

    - Click TCP/IP Filtering and then Properties

    - Uncheck Enable TCP/IP filtering (or check all 'permit all' options)

  • If you are receiving this error, you should run the Microsoft patch (KB884020) for it. Follow the instructions below to do this. Alternatively, you can download a zip file with the patch, registry file, and instructions by clicking here. 1 ) Download the patch from Microsoft's site 2) Run the update to install it  3) Run this short Registry fix to complete the update. Type the following lines in Notepad and save the file as FixReg.reg on your desktop, then double click on it to install into your registry.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec]

"AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule"=dword:00000002

4) Reboot your computer

  • Check your network card to make sure it’s configured correctly and working properly. Many times setting the network card to 10Mbps/Full Duplex will solve this issue. To do this, open Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Go to the properties of the Network card, click on the Advanced tab and find the Link Speed and Duplex section. Change it from Auto Detect to 10Mbps/Full Duplex.

  •  Check and test your firewall. Your firewall, especially if it’s a software firewall like ZoneAlarm, Black Ice, Norton Firewall or something else could be blocking the connection. Disable your firewall and test the connection. You may have to resolve the problem by even uninstalling and reinstalling the firewall.

  • If you are doing this and you are still having the issue, then if you are running XP SP2, got to start>run>CMD.    In the DOS window, type netsh then hit enter. At the c:/NETSH> prompt, type WINSOCK RESET CATALOG, then hit enter. Reboot your PC and see if that helps.

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Since you didn't post the complete ipconfig output , it's difficult to help.

Thanks,

I'll try again, but unless a miracle happens, I won't be able to post it until Monday, when I get back to work.

You can avoid having to write (and read) and type:
Start | Run "CMD"
This brings up a black (DOS) windows pane
C: press [Enter]
CD \ press [Enter]
MD \DOWNLOAD press [Enter]
CD \DOWNLOAD press [Enter]
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.TXT
EXIT press [Enter]
That returns you to your desktop, at which point you can go to your C: \Download folder and Open "My.TXT" using either notepad or Wordpad and that will give you the full text, which you can then Edit | COPY and then Paste into the forum post.

Reset?

Re-configure?

Replace?

April 24th, 2006 12:00

Well, it appears that the problem has been solved.

I made a technician from my ISP come to the house, and evidently, there was some sort of problem with the modem.

Thanks for everyone's help.  Sorry if I wasted your time.

Don't really know.  He came to fix it while I was gone and the wife was there.

It looks like the same modem, but there are new cables (both), and the wife said he replaced some sort of filter outside the house.

I hope you also get a monetary credit for the days (week(s)?) it was not working.

April 24th, 2006 17:00

Oh yeah.  I complained quite a bit.  Told them that I had to reinstall my operating system and whatnot, based on what their tech told me in the first place.  They're giving me credit for the downtime, plus a free month's worth of service.

They don't call me "squeaky wheel" for nothing.
