Does your son's laptop run on Win XP? If it does, is the Windows Firewall enabled? Does it have any third party firewall software?(Norton Internet Security, McAfee, Zone Alarm, etc.)
If these firewalls are enabled? They wreak havoc on network connection and need to be properly configured in order to allow the system network access.
If you have multiple firewalls enabled? It's best to leave one enabled and disable the other(s).

Have you recycled your network components?
Shut power off to computer, router and cable/DSL modem or RG.
Wait five minutes > power on cable/DSL modem > wait another five minutes > power on router > turn on computer.
See if that remedies the problem?

Tried the power down, as well as on a separate LAN.
Doesn't matter - still have same problem.
Thanks,
Tim
