Limited/No Connectivity Issues

Hi,

I've been having problems getting an internet connection with my inspiron 600m laptop. It's been unable to connect to the internet and i always get a limited/no connection message. I know it's not any hardware problems, i've tried different cables and directing connecting my dsl modem into my laptop.

I've also tried changing some of the settings. I've messed around with the speed/duplex values (it's at 100 full right now). I've also done the ipconfig release and renew but i keep on getting the error message: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request was timed out. Any suggestions as to what I can do to get this connection to work?

Here's what my laptop gave me when i did the ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

Host name: calvin-zwb9cjmb
Primary DNS suffix:
Node type: Broadcast
IP routing enabled: No
WINS proxy enabled: No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection

Connection-specific DNS suffix:
Description: Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller
Physical address: 00-0F-1F-BA-0D-3D
DHCP enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration ip address: 169.254.40.89
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway:

thanks in advance!

Have you tried to just disable and enable the card again?  You can also go into device manager, and uninstall the card.  Once the card is uninstalled, reboot your machine.  When the machine comes back up, go back into device manager, do a hardware scan, and it should detect your NIC again.

Something else you might want to try is to assign a static IP to your NIC that is the same information you would normally get from your DSL router.  If you can get it working with a static IP, then something may be wrong with the DHCP aspect of that router.

Good Luck,

Aaron

One question: How do I assign a static IP to my NIC?

  1. Go into the Control Panel
  2. Open Network Connections
  3. Right click on your NIC, select Properties
  4. Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  5. Select "Use the Following IP Address"
  6. Type in the IP Address
  7. Type in the Subnet Mask
  8. Type in the Default Gateway
  9. Type in the 2 DNS Servers

Your ISP should be able to tell you exactly what numbers you should be using.
