linksys "connected" but Internet Explorer "Server not found"?

My wireless connection shows connected, but when I open my browser I get the message that the "server can't be found". Any suggestions as to where to begin to solve this problem?

Will have to check step by step.

Is there any other computer going online through the router?

Are you able to go online when directly connected from the modem (bypassing the router)?

What is the IP address and address type? (Right click on the wireless connection and choose Status - Support)

Further information would be helpful in pin-pointing the issue.

I can get the internet if I go through the dial up modem.

The IP address is "assigned by DHCP" and 192.168.1.100.

I'm really not sure what information would be helpful.

Dial-up modem?  Have you a broadband connection to the router?  If so, what type of broadband connection is it (e.g., cable, DSL/ADSL/VDSL, GE, etc.)?  Have you configured your router to connect to the Internet using your broadband connection?

I kept my dial up as a back up, because I have had problems before. My wireless connection is through a router. How would I know what type of connection it is? Where could I look for that information? It does say that I am connected to linksys. I open Internet Explorer, get the finding page message, checking proxy settings, and then "Server Not Found". It's a Dimension 4700C.

Am I posting this on an inappropriate board? I thought this was a forum.

There are 2 connections being involved when setting up any router: broadband (external) and LAN (internal, wired or wireless).  Yes, you are connected to the Linksys, but that's just your wireless LAN.  Your Linksys needs to be connected to the Internet through your broadband connection, which is another connection - you need to be subscribed to one from an ISP.  The two connections are mutually exclusive and can exist on their own without the other being present.  You still need to have a broadband connection to connect to the Internet.

One way to find out what type of broadband connection you have is to call your ISP.  You could tell us how you connect to your broadband connection directly without the router.  For example, cable broadband does not usually require login, but DSL/ADSL/VDSL often use PPPoE which behave like a dial-up and require a login and password (with Windows XP, PPPoE is built-in and looks exactly like a dial-up login).  Once you know what type of broadband connection you have, you can start configuring your router to connect to the Internet, then share this connection with any computer connected to it through LAN.

Can you open Command Prompt and run IPCONFIG /ALL and post info on your wireless connection such as IP address, DNS addresses, and Default Gateway IP address?
