Linksys router issue

I'm hoping someone can help, as my warranty is expired and I see that everyone is significantly more knowledgeable than I. I have a Linksys router that is hooked up to a desktop computer that is connecting to the Internet with no problem. My laptop sees the connection and says it is connected, but I cannot access the Internet. Each time I do, the browser I pull up says Server cannot be found. I have tried to repair the connection (using the "Repair" command), have tried to set it to obtain TCP/IP settings automatically, have disconnected and attempted to reconnect and am out of ideas. We have a cable internet connection that is getting to the desktop with no problem but the laptop is left cold. What am I missing? If someone can help, I would be most grateful. And typing a thank you on my own computer. Ashley

I am having the same problem with my router, but I am getting connection on one notebook but not the other. The notebook that wont connect shows I have an excellent connection, but I Have limited or no connectivity. the router can not find the right ip address. been in contact with linksys and they could not fix problem. they seem to think its my wireless adapter card. I not so sure about this, and since the notebook is not under warninty any more not sure what to do. Any one got a suggestion.

Ya know what folks? I think the problem is with the router (linksys). I have four desk/2 laptops connected. When I have a connection problem on ANY of them, I simply pull the power plug on the back of the router and reinsert it. Guess what? They all come back on.
Hope it helps.

I assume the laptop is trying to connect wireless. You do need the settings to aquire ip address and DNS automatically. Post by Out is the thing to try.
You may need to power cycle the modem and router. Try this:
Pull the power on the modem and router. Wait 4 minutes or so. Power the modem. After it powers fully then power the router. When it powers fully then try to connect wireless. If the ip address cannot be found then hit start and select run then type in cmd and hit enter. Type in ipconfig /release and hit enter. Then type in ipconfig /renew and then enter. The ip address should renew. If if does try wireless again.
If this does not work it is possible the router setup isn't configured properly. Let us know if the power cycle does not fix it.

See if there is a firmware update for the router.  If so, install it.

I checked on a firmware update but no joy. I'm using -- well, can't read when I flip over, but did try for update. The power cycle does work for me anyway. Hope it helps someone.
When I can afford a better router, I'll get one.
It shouldn't matter what you pay, they should all just work.

We live in a disposable society and for what you pay for these things and what they do, the price is dirt cheap.  You should not have to pay any more than $50 for a new router.
I have tried them all and for ease of setup and operations, Linksys allways comes thru for me.
