You actually have two wireless connection management (or client) software on your computer - Windows own called Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) and whatever is bundled with the wireless adapter (in this case Intel PRO/Wireless client). As many people who adopted wireless networking very early on have found out - only one client software can be use, hence the choice to switch from one to the other. It sounds like your computer is using WZC currently.
As the setups are not interchangeable, you will lose your connection when you switch from one to the other if you haven't configured BOTH client software. If you switch to use PRO/Wireless you need to configure it to connect to the wireless network again.
By the way, both WRT54G and PRO/Wireless support the more secure WPA and WPA2 encryption.

All you need to do is just update the Drivers for your Computer.
