The computer is a Sony Vaio laptop, a few years old, and the router is a linksys G which is also a few years old.  I haven't tried changing the channel, this is probably a dumb question but, how exactly do I do that? It seems to always be providing full power. When I hook it up with an ethernet cord the signal works fine. Thanks for your help.

Which model computer?  Which make and model wireless netwrok adapter?  Have you tried changing the channel the router uses in an effert to eliminate interference from other 2.4 Ghz wireless devices (like cordless phones or other wireless networks)?  Have you checked the power management settings on your wireless adapter to make sure that it is always providing full power?

I know absolutely nothing about Sony computers or the wireless adapters on Sony computers.  But, the power management settings should be found in Device Manager.  (Click the + sign next to Network Adpaters, right click your wireless adapter and select Properties, then click on the Power Management tab).  Power management on wireless is completely serparate from power management on your ethernet connection.

To change the channel on the router, open a web browser the type http:\\192.168.1.1 into the address bar.  This should open the configuration page on your Linksys Router (when in doubt, READ THE MANUAL that came with the router).  If you have not changed the default settings, the username is left blank and the password is admin.  Once in, you should be able to find the setting to change the channel.  Use either 1 or 11.
