Linksys WUSB54G - Beware different versions...

I use a Linksys WRT54G router, which has been flawless. It was wirelessly connected to 2 computers with Linksys WUSB 54G adapters... No problem...

When I wanted to wirelessly add a third computer, I decided to stick with what had worked for me, the WUSB54G. I thought the interchangeability would be nice. I got a new WUSB54G, installed it, and all was fine... Except...

It is a different version of the WUSB54G, and is not interchangeable with the other two. The boxes are exactly the same, the units look exactly the same, except that 2 of them say Version 4 on the back of the unit by the serial number. Only one of the boxes says version 4, so apparently they updated the item before updating the boxes.  I need to return my new one and find a version 4 so I can be the same on all machines....

They all worked, they just weren't interchangeable, as you'd expect. This is just an FYI if you value system consistency....

I already checked...

On the Linksys download site, they do list the WUSB54G and WUSB54G version 4, but  (along with a Version 2.. guess they don't like odd numbers....) but the drivers are different for each, and none of them have any firmware updates available. I'd be leery of any third party firmware....
