Usually, the I1100 comes with a Conexant D480 driver (try looking up your components for the I1100), so you may want to check with the manufacturer of your modem. Dell usually has drivers for Windows only, with only a few Linux drivers in its download site.

Yeah i have spent a few days playing with the modem and have come to no solution.
Basically Dell have changed from a conexant modem(<2.2Gig C) to a broadcom(2.4G C) now Dell have a broadcom driver for a previous broadcom modem and I have managed to get it recompiled under my 2.4.22 kernel but the driver does not find the device and web notes say it might not support the latest modems(which it does not).
The closent think to a working driver i can find is from www.smlink.com they provide a rather generic driver which does find the modem and can even exec ATI commands.
BUT as soon as I try to dial the driver hangs on version 2.9.X, and cannot find a carrier on version 2.7&2.8.
So it appears smlink have a driver ready for use but still needs some debugging.
BUT can someone else test smlinks 2.9.4 driver and see if they get the same results. driver is available from ftp://ftp.smlink.com/linux/unsupported/slmodem-2.9.4.tar.gz
Only valid for laptops recently purchased with a broadcom modem.

My modem is a broadcom. I just got this thing last week. You know I am already having to install a new cd rom drive. It came with a QSI drive and it stopped working within 3 days. The new one looks like it is a Hitachi drive. Hopefully this one is better than this QSI drive. It is not a very good drive.
Thanks
