Local Connection Only - Dell Studio 1555
Looking for help with wireless setup on new Dell Studio 1555 laptop, running vista home premium. has excellent signal strength and connects to router ok, but no internet connection. Internet works fine when connected by cable to router. My Dell desktop, with the same operating system, is able to connect without any problems via wireless network, and did so out of the box, so I am surprised the laptop is not connecting. I have checked I have the correct security code etc, and rebooted the router and laptop numerous times. Any help appreciated.
Regards, Phil

Phil,
Did you setup the wireless router?
Did you try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless router?

this could be a firewall/av issue. Try temporarily disabling them and see if it will connect.
Another thing to try is to boot into Safe Mode with Network support and see if it will connect.

Rick and Dave,
Thanks for your responses. I was finally able to connect by turning off WEP security - and before you ask I did have the correct password entered. The router is a combined home / business (not my business) router, so I will have to check with the boss to see if there is a reason (compatability issues?) as to why the router is using WEP - i suspect it is because it was set up long ago and no one has bothered to change it. I havent tried with WPA security as yet, as I didnt want to mess around with the setting too much, but if I understand it correctly vista seems to have less issues with WPA compared with WEP.
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers, Phil

Phil,
WEP is always an issue. It can be hacked and is not as secure as WPA. WPA has recently been hacked but it's a lot harder to hack. The longer the password, the longer it takes to hack it. WEP has been hacked in less than ten minutes.
Since this sounds like a business, I'm sure you're using some printers. If they're wireless, then I'd recommend using WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security (Personal) and using channels 1, 6 or 11. I use channel 11. Most wireless devices work best on these channels. Mixed mode is what I use as I suspect my wireless print servers likes b mode, even though it says it has a bg card. Updating the firmware in the wireless router is usually a big help to as they sit in a warehouse for a long period of time and they get out dated.
Keep us posted.

philmcd76,
GREAT JOB! :emotion-21: Glad you got it working. I would suggest that you also do this little tweak.
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
