Local network - access
When I try to view my network places I receive message that Mshome is not accessible and I might not have permission to use the network resource. I only have a lap top and desk top. The internet is set up thru the hub. Both machines have access to the internet. The other problem is that I can ping both machines from the the lap top but cannot ping any machines from the desk top. The desk is listed on the lap top workgroup computers but when I try to look at the desk top it states it is not accessible. It seems the whole problem is the desk top which is not giving access to anything.

LimeyPaul,
Also have you disabled the Windows XP built in firewall? The XP firewall will not allow file and printer sharing.

LimeyPaul,
Just a question...
Do you have a router? Are both computers connected to the router via the hub? If you have a router, what is the manufacturer and model number of the router?

You need to download the Broadcom 4401 Integrated NIC network driver from the Dell Upgrades page. It is an updated driver and should fix your problem. Check the date on your driver file - it is probably May of 2003 - no longer good. The new one should be dated August of 2003.
I just got two machines shipped from Dell with this problem - I called tech support, but no one could seem to figure out this simple issue. I found out from a consultant.
Let me know if this works.

The Windows XP firewall has never allowed file and printer sharing. So unless you somehow enabled it recently, it would not fix the problem. If you want to protect yourself from the internet and have file and printer sharing enabled, then you need to connect through a router (which serves the same firewall function as the XP firewall) or use a third party firewall that is configurable to allow local network traffic.

My driver shows a date of 1/7/2004. Is this the same as your new driver? - thanks for the response....

I may be having problems in my replies - I am not giving the ID of the person I am responding to - for that I apologise. The way I now stand is that (I do not know what I did to get to this point - I have done so many things) I seem to have the desk top with ping capabilities for both machines and can see the shared files on both machines. I now have lost access from the lap top to the desk top but can see the shared files on the lap top and can ping the lap top. I cannot ping the desk top from the lap top. Would like to add my thanks to all of you - I am where I am now with help from all of you - I have tried to do what each of you suggested but as a true amatuer I did not keep a record of what I did. but 90 % with your help is a good start. I would like to try and ID what I did
I checked the driver date and it was 1/7/2004
I removed the fire wall from both machines thru the network connections - I sure hope the hub is protecting me
I reran the wizard to set up the home network on both machines and did not create a disk from either machine

LimeyPaul,
Although you may have a newer driver, it may still not be the right one. Try downloading the one on the upgrades page - I had the same problems you're having. My firewall was not enabled. I used that driver and it fixed everything - I was able to see other computers on the new one, not just ping them. It doesn't take that long and it was an easy fix. It may not be the answer to your problem, but everything you're saying sounds pretty familiar. It's worth a try.
