Losing DSL Internet connection

I have new DSL service with Verizon.  I have good connection after bootup but I am have trouble with connecting to internet after long idle times (after many hours of no activity).  The modem is westell model 6100 and all status lights are  green (normal condition) saying DSL connected.  I am connected to PC by ethernet cable and status is good.

I have Intel Pro/100 VE network connection in my Dell 4700.  I use XP Pro SP2 and IE7.
DHCP and autoconfig is enabled.

Turning off modem for period of time and back on doesn't re-establish connection.  Closing and reopening IE doen't work either.  The only way I have been able to re-establish connection is to restart PC.

So far Verizon has only recommended turning off/on modem, make sure automatically detect settings is checked, reset IE settings, and delete all cookies/internet temp files.

Can't figure out this problem. Any ideas I am overlooking?

Regards,
Craig

The real clincher is that your Westell 6100 is a modem/router. It uses the ip address of 192.168.1.1

I had this problem with mine. I had to change the ip address in my wireless router. I had to change the LAN ip setup to 192.168.7.1

Remember to update the firmware in your wireless router
Broadcast SSID
Use WPA Security.

Use nothing else.

Open Device Manager, expand the listing for Network Adapters, right click the Intel Pro adapter, select Properties, then click on the Power Management tab.   Disable any power management settings and see if that fixes the problem.

I unchecked the power management but still have the same problem. After a few hours of inactivity - no connection.

Did I need a restart for this to take effect?

I hit the wrong reply - see post above about power manager.  I thought that might be it but must be something else. The only other power managers I have on are for monitor and hard drive but nothing else that I am aware of. It has to be something that is reset when I restart PC because that is only way I have found to regain connection.

Verizon seems to think it might be the ethernet cable or card. I just updated driver for Intel Pro/100 VE so I will see if that fixes it.

After driver update, still have a problem losing connection after several hours of no activity and have to restart to regain connection. I did notice that I could send out an e-mail but couldn't get a web page to open. Watching the lan connection icon in tray, shows no activity when trying to get a page to open or refresh.

Seems like a port is closed.

Everything looks great there.   You have a valid IP address which is being supplied by your router.  This indicates a successful connection to the router.  The Domain Server is being detected as your Westel Router, and that is normal.  Whenever you obtain an IP address form a DHCP server, it is given for a certain amount of time.  This is called a lease IP address.  All of that looks normal.  Was your wireless connection working when you ran this ipconfig command?

I am connected through ethernet cable - no wireless router yet. That will be my next purchase to connect 2nd PC.

Still baffled by lost connection and having to restart PC to regain. I might try different ethernet card if I borrow one from friend but I am leaning toward IE7 problem.

I keep putting pieces of this puzzle together.

I'm sorry, I meant to say - was your internet connection working when you ran the ipconfig command?

I see no difference between when I have connection and when I don't.  I do notice there is no activity showing on the LAN icon when I try to open a web page or when I try to start up AOL instant mess.

It acts like the ports are shut down. The LAN icon indicates a connection when I hover mouse over it.

So, to sum up what I have noticed - after a period of several hours of no activity, I lose connection.  When this occurs I can't open a web page, send/recieve e-mail, or connect to AOL Instant mess.

Windows firewall is off and I use Zonealarm for firewall.

Any thoughts on this?

Craig

What type of wireless router is the HAL9000?

Is the firmware updated?

Broadcast SSID
Ues WPA Security

mixed b and g mode

use channels 1, 6 or 11. These work for most devices.

The Westell 6100 is a modem/router and uses the ip address of 192.168.1.1.

What opens up when you click on this http://192.168.1.1/

Your LAN ip address in your wireless router needs to be different from the Westell 6100.

I have mine at 192.168.7.1

I haven't hqad a conflict since I was told to change it.

I don't have a wireless router.  HAL9000 is the name of the computer (this doesn't ring any bells?).

Modem is directly connected to PC via ethernet cable.

Try moving the Westell 6100 away from the computer by about 3 feet, if you can.

Update the firmware in the Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection

Looks like you should be able to get this from drivers and downloads. Intel says the drivers are provided by the manufacturer.
