Lost Network/Internet Connection

I have a non-Dell laptop networked with a Dell Dimension 8100.  The network is through a cable modem (Comcast is the ISP) wired to a Linksys router.  The 8100 is wired to the router.  The laptop can connect via the wired LAN, or through a signal from a Linksys wireless access point which is wired to the router.

Both desktop and laptop run Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all recent updates.  The laptop, after over a year of networking without a hitch, has stopped connecting either to the local network or to the internet via either the wired or wireless connection.  The laptop cannot see the local network, and the desktop indicates that the laptop is not on the network.

The laptop indicates that both the wired LAN signal and the wireless LAN signal are good.  I have tried release/renew via ipconfig with no help.  ipconfig response indicates that the laptop is not getting DHCP information from the router, even all seems to be copacetic with the router setup.

I have directly connected the laptop with the LAN cable that is normally connected to the desktop, with the same results.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy

Thanks for the suggestions.  Tried both and neither worked.

More information:  this seemed to occur after returning from a trip which involved the laptop being scanned several times by airport carry-on baggage security scanners.   I also allowed an update to Windows Media Player to install install.

I tried a System Restore to a date prior to the trip mentioned above, and internet/network connection was restored, until I turned off the computer and restarted it.  After the restart, no more connection.  Tried this several times with the same result each time.

Finally, I used the recovery disks provided with the computer to take the system back to "as delivered" configuration (sigh), and it seems that the connection issue has been fixed.  Now I just have to finish setting it up again to personal preferences.
