mac address
I'm trying to create secure connection with my Netgear and I can't seem to locate the MAC address on my laptop. Can anyone help me to locate this information??

pinkie2010,
You really don't need to use Mac Address Filtering on your wireless router. WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security (Personal) should be good enough, WPA2 is better but not all wireless devices work with WPA2 security.
Using Mac address filtering sometimes coflicts with the WPA Security and Mac Addresses can be changed, so If someone has the tool, they can hack into your network with no problems.

Thanks Rick,
I will try this and see if it works. I'm not real computer savvy. It took me hours to get to the point where I got stuck on the mac address part. I just chose the first option which was WPA security setting, my router has the mac info on the bottom of it so that was no problem, but I couldn't locate it on my laptop. Thanks again for the reply I'll let you know if it works.

Suzi,
Just make sure you do NOT use mac address filtering. I use
I usually recommend when changing settings to make a new SSID, so it's easier to connect.
WPA-PSK(TKIP)Security (Personal)
mixed mode
channel 11
Save and exit. Power everything off for 30 seconds, then turn everything back on. Restart your computer and connect.
Rick
There is a reset button in the back of the router, press and hold for 30 seconds and this returns it to factory(except the login password) and you can start over, if needed.

Suzi,
Your setup should be
wall > ISP Modem/router > Wireless router > wired/wireless
Press and hold the reset button in the wireless router for 30 seconds before connecting the ethernet cable into with wireless router from the computer.
To setup the wireless router, plug an ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports and then enter the default gateway.
It should ask for SSID, give it a different name, type of security, WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security (Personal), channel 11, mixed mode. do NOT enable Mac Address filtering and it should not ask you for a Mac Address.,
EVERYTHING else should be factory settings.

Rick,
I'm soooo frustrated right now, I can't see straight!! I tried what you suggested, but when I go to setup the access list for my laptop to access the internet through the router, it still wants me to put the MAC address in for the laptop which I don't know where that is. I don't know if this has any relevance, but my router is hooked up through a time warner cable modem and all the desktop cords are plugged into the router as well. It has the capability to be a wireless router but in order to get it working we had to plug all cords in.
