Managed vs Unmanaged switches
Hello all,
What are the major performance diferrences between a
managed gigabit switch and an
unmanaged gigabit switch other than price? I'm running a small network using 5 dims and 1 Inspiron. Any ideas or experiences? Mega thanks in advance!

Basically, a managed switch is a configurable one. Managed switches have operating systems and user interfaces. They are basically computers. You can program them, you can set them up for trunking or link aggregation, you can do vLANs, you can configure spanning tree, set up switch matrices, check port status, send manual WOL commands, etc.
An un-managed switch will give the same performances, but your configuration options will be limited and all the ports on the switch will "see" each other. you can plug stuff in and have them see each other. That's about it
So, if you do not need advanced functions, like V-LANs, and only need to connect all your computers in the same subnet/workgroup, then go for the cheaper un-managed switch, and you'll get the same results.
Hoping this helps you,
Rick
