modem and graphics card issues (oh and dialtone)

ok here goes...

now my pc's modem (connexant) apparantly works fine bu whenever i plug it into the line, it just goes dead( i tested it with a socket doubler and my phone). now i used dell help to try and find out what was wrong and after some searching i found that my graphics card had the same "interrupt rate" or something like that as my modem. it also said that this could be the reason, so i tried to change it. unfortunately i'm not THAT skilled with computers and couldn't do it.

can anybody help? i'd like to know how to change the settings or if anybody from the description can see what is wrong...

thanks!

This is normal. Modern PCI devices share IRQs, and no further modifications to those settings are necessary.

Check the cable you are using to connect the modem to the phone jack. Try a cable that is known to be working within another device.

If this problem just began occurring and a new or replacement cable does not resolve the problem, the modem itself may be the cause of the problem, and may need to be replaced.
