Modem ethernet cable problem.

I have a  4550 that has had no previous modem problems. Recently I cleaned the C drive and reinstalled windowsXP.  Every thing OK except the 4550 will  not recogize the modem. I use a cable modem that  operates ok with other computers. I note that the pilot lite on the cable connection to the 4550 does not go out when the cable is disconnected, in fact it won't go out even if the computer is turned off unelss the power cord is disconnected.  Is this a software or hardware problem - or user problem?

Can you provide the manufacturer and model of the modem you are having trouble with?

Modem is a Motorolla, surfboard, model SB5100. It is currently working from a Linksys 4-port switch  Cable/DSL Router. The other computer on the router works properly  with the  modem. I have switched cables and port hook ups around and also by-passed the router with the problem computer.

You may need to run the networking wizard and set up connection for Local Area Network (LAN). If DHCP is enabled on the router, you will need to configure Windows to obtain an IP address automatically. Click here to view instructions on enabling DHCP in Windows XP. Also, this pdf user guide for the Linksys BEFSR41 should have the information you need. If you have a different router, you can find the user guide here.
