The first suggestion is to do a complete "clean" reinstall of all software (reformat the hard drive then reinstall everything).
As far as the modem not detecting the line, if you are using AOL that software is known to be buggy and may be causing that. However, if the interconnect cable between the modem and the telephone line is bad that can also cause that (providing the telco wall jack where you plug the modem into is working OK).
I do not use AOL , I have dial up through Iowatelecom. Phone line is good, when I unplugged from computer and plug into phone I have dial tone. A friend that went to school for IT told me to reinstall drivers. I did and it worked 3 times and then no dial tone again. I bought a new Stratitec modem at Wall-Mart (cheapest one they had) and installed. Works fine now. I contacted Dell again, had to speak to a superviser to get any answers. He told me blue screen crash caused by W indows auto update and lightning took out modem. I have ALL computer components and phone line run through a surge protecter. I dont think we get many thunderstorms in Iowa in the dead of winter.
While reading this forum I see a lot of modem problems on computers purchased in last 6 months. Might Dell have a bad batch installed at factory? Do you know what # on modem card is manufacture date or lot # ? It might good to post these #s to see if this could be the problem.
