Modem has dial tone, won't connect

Modem has been working fine on my Dimension 3000, but threw me out last night and won't recconnect. The dial tone is there but "fuzzy" sounding when I hear it through the computer. Tried different phone line cord, plugged regular phone into jack and the dial tone is good on the regular phone and I can call out with a phone, so the jack works fine. Modem helper says everything is fine. I uninstalled/re-installed the modem software, but still have fuzzy dial tone and the modem dials my server but isn't getting past the dial tone. HELP!!!

Same problem!!!

DIMENSION 4700 / Windows XP Pentium 4 with Intel Modem 537EP V9x

Tried everything -- Uninstalling, re-installing, wizard -- all systems checked out OK. Called ISP and we went through all the steps to make sure software was working. They listened to the faint dial tone and the dialer twice. Once it was followed by a faint voice message from the telephone company which said in part: "... hang up and dial again." The other time the computer (or modem) made a very loud buzzing noise that didn't stop until I shut down the dialer program.

What's going on here?

I have a new Dell Dimension 3000 as well - modem was working fine until about 3 weeks ago. Used dialup to NetZero and all was fine one day - next day - would not connect to any Netzero number. I have done all the Dell Diags and it is fine. I have done a system restore to a point in time where I know it worked - still nothing. I am utterly frustrated that a new computer will just quit working. I can hear it connect, but it appears that once connected it can't communicate. You can hear a strange constant sound coming from the modem. I contacted Dell online help and they are useless! Can anyone help?

I finally went out and bought a new 56K modem from Walmart ($24.00) and installed it -- now everything works fine.  NOT impresssed with the Dell modem in my 120 day old computer.  It died just after the 90 day warranty was up.  Modem helper always said the "modem passed" even though it never would connect.  I also heard "hang up and dial again" faintly in the background like one of you who wrote back said.  Hope this helps someone!!

I finally got the modem working. It appears that it was a software conflict with my multi-function printer. It's a cannon multipass - not worth all the trouble - stick with single funtion devices. I used Dell's web site troubleshooting utility - after it died 3 or 4 times for me - I finally made it through the entire troubleshooting utility. It lead me to the msconfig utility to try to eliminate some of the non-microsoft services at startup. When I removed the printer support software from startup the modem worked fine - every time - dialed and connected with no issue. I will have to work on a workaround for the printer - but at least the dialup is working. It appears that the new modems and their drivers just don't play well with other software. If you would like to try your hand at the troubleshooting process go to the following site and work through each step - it may be worth your time. Good luck!   http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/entry?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
